Welcome to the Kaw Nation

Cruz Maldonado – Chairperson for Kaw Nation

Dear Kaw Tribal Members:

My name is Cruz Maldonado. I would be honored to serve as the Chairperson for Kaw Nation. I am the grandson of full blood, Levi A. Chouteau. I have served as your tribal council member, since the fall of 2016. I have 20 years of working in the healthcare field and 11 of those years. I owned my own businesses. I owned a nursing home and did medical equipment.

At the end of 2017, I was asked to be involved with the nation by helping with the entities. I became the Director of Kaw Nation Business Services and Economic Development. I understand the responsibility of this position is to be a leader in the organization and I am certain that I can push the Kaw Nation to be successful.

Kaw Nation is driven by grants to operate their programs. There are currently 50 grants that the nation is operating today to provide services and employment. Grants are not a guaranteed solution for the nation to provide for the members or future members. As a nation, I believe that we need to development a strategic 20 year plan that addresses and maps the needs for our people. We, as a nation, need to shift our dependency on grants and gaming. We need to be more developing in the fields that are leaders in today’s economy and market.  Our current entities should be more developed to survive today’s market and we need to expand our efforts to develop new businesses to ensure the financial success and economically expand our diversity. We once were the leaders of the vision for expansion for the economy in our area and beyond. However, we have fallen behind significantly in the competition. Our current entities should be more developed to survive today’s market and we need to expand our efforts to develop new businesses to ensure the financial success and economically expand our diversity. Our 5 year plan for the nation was expired in 2016 and little effort has been made to create an updated plan.

The goals for my term as the chairperson of the nation is as follows:

  1. Constitutional Reform
  2. Social service expansion for our elders
  3. Robust economic development effort
  4. Increase technology innovation
  5. Improve employee benefits ( this will ensure that the quality talent that is employed stays and attract more quality potential employees)
  6. Create more efficient processes within our tribal government
  7. Ensure the corporate charter is established
  8. Safeguard our culture preservation and language programs

I respectfully ask for your support and vote Sunday, September 9th. I will leave you with some inspiration for our nation.

Thank you for your support,

Cruz Maldonado
