Citizens of the Kaw Nation are hereby notified that an election will be held on May 22nd, 2016 for the purpose of filling one vacancy. The person elected shall fill the following position for the remainder of the term:

*Tribal Council Chair

The election is conducted in accordance with Article IX, pursuant to Section 4, of the Constitution of the Kaw Nation, ratified on August 20th, 2011.

Voter Qualifications:

A qualified voter must:

*Be an enrolled citizen of the Kaw Nation

*Be 18 years of age or older on the date of the election

*Not have been adjudged mentally incompetent by a court of competent jurisdiction.

Candidate Filing Fees

At the time of filing the Declaration of Candidacy form, candidates must also pay a non-refundable filing fee of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150.00). Filing fees must be paid in money order or certified check. Personal Checks will not be accepted.


Absentee Voting

Voters may request an Absentee Ballot from the Election Committee. Please send written requests to:

Upon receipt of a written request containing the voter’s signature the Election Committee shall mail an absentee ballot to the requester. The last day that a written request for an absentee ballot can be received by the Election Committee is April 22nd, 2016.


Absentee ballots must be returned in the pre-addressed mailing envelopes provided with the ballot. Ballots must be returned by postal mail to the above address, no later than May 21st, 2016. No ballots will be accepted in person or at any other location.


Election Results:

Immediately following the tabulation of the ballots, the Election Committee shall issue an unofficial canvass of the Election results. The Election Committee shall issue the Certified Election Results after the expiration of the protest period at 12:00 pm on May 25th, 2016 or after the resolution of any challenges received by the election Committee, whichever is later. Election results will be posted at the appropriate Tribal Offices as well as being released to all appropriate media outlets at the conclusion of the election.

Candidate Qualifications

In accordance with Article IX, Section 2, (A), (B), (C), of the Constitution of the Kaw Nation, a qualified candidate must:

(A) Be a member of the Kaw Nation General Council not less than twenty-five (25) years of age on the date of the election.

(B) Be one-thirty second (1/32nd) degree or more of the Kaw Indian Blood.

(C) Have earned a high school diploma or passed a General Education Development (GED) test.

In accordance with Article IX, section 3, (A) and (B) of the Constitution of the Kaw Nation, the following are disqualifications for candidates:

  1. A) No person may be a candidate for more than one (1) elected office at any election or hold more than one (1) elected office in the Kaw Nation at any one time.
  2. B) No person having been convicted of a felony or any other crime involving moral turpitude shall be eligible to hold any elected office, unless such person has received a pardon thereof.

In accordance with Section 12, (E) and (F) of the Election and Voting Ordinance: E) Within the past seven (7) years has not been removed or recalled from holding office on the Kaw Nation Tribal  Council. F) Within the past seven (7) years has not resigned from holding office on the Kaw Nation Tribal Council while an action to remove him/her was pending.

A qualified citizen of the Kaw Nation who desire to have their name placed on the ballot as a candidate must file a “Declaration of Candidacy” with the Kaw Nation Election Committee. Declaration of Candidacy Forms will be available from the Election Committee during filing days, March 9th to March 23rd, 2016, between 1:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Kaw Nation Administration Building.

Prospective candidates must also complete and file a Fund Disclosure Information Form at the time of candidate filing. All candidates whose names appear on the ballot, regardless of the outcome of the election, must file a final Fund Contributor Disclosure Information Form within fourteen (14) days of the date of the Election. Failure to file this form will result in disqualification from office, until such time as the corrected form is filed.
