Jacque Secondine Hensley – Chair
I am very pleased to be able to address you through our updated website and new Kaw newsletter. As I had mentioned in my Inaugural address, I had plans for making changes here at Kaw Nation and from day one I have set on a course to modernize and streamline how we will do business here at Kaw Nation. We have made many changes and many more will be made in the future. Some of these changes were not easy to make but in the long run, these changes will save money and allow for more direct services to be made to Kaw Nation Members which should always be one of our primary goals.
In regard to providing services to Kaw Nation Members, efforts are under way to insure Kaw Nation will be able to provide dentures, glasses and hearing aids to more of our members. Additionally steps have been taken to increase the number of walk-in patients at the Kaw Nation Clinic, to increase the number of Office work days during the year and to lower the overall cost of employee salaries.
In the whirlwind that has been the last few months, I have attend the White House Tribal Nations Conference to engage with Federal Officials in the areas which require their assistance for our future development and I have begun the process with the Army Corps of Engineers to see that the Kaw Nations water rights are preserved and protected. Additionally, I attended the National Congress of American Indian’s fall session where in the General Assembly, I addressed the issue of the lack of sanctions for violating the Indian child Welfare Act.
We are on a very clear and quick path to expanding our Casino at Braman. In the very near future we intend to break ground on an expansion which we believe will become the prime Gaming/Entertainment destination in our area. At the same time we are working to adapt our Casino in Newkirk to be more in line with the effects of our immediate competition.
As the holidays approach, I would like all Kaw Nation Members to ask themselves “what can I do to help my Tribe”. To that end, please drop me a line with any suggestion you may have as to how we might do something better for the benefit of the Kaw Nation. I wish each and every one of you all the very best for the season. Enjoy your families and traditions during this festive season, and let us all work together to make Kaw Nation more successful in 2017!
