Human Resources (Jobs)

Attention Kaw Members

Kaw Nation is starting an employment opportunity that may interest you.

Sometimes when we are waiting on someone to start a job or just have a vacancy that needs to be filled for a short period of time we need someone to fill in the basic parts of the job.  The Kaw Members who depend on the services of the Kaw Nation sometimes have to wait for the permanent new hires and we want  our tribal members to start the process as soon as possible.

These positions will be short-term and temporary.  Pay rates, days and hours will vary based on the duties of the position.  All available members who would like to do these fill-in positions would have an interview to place them where they are best suited and comfortable working when needs arise.

So, if you are retired, unemployed or just looking for something to do in your spare time, please fill out an application and submit it to the Human Resources Department.  We will keep your information on file and when an opening comes up we will contact those interested about the opportunity.

KAW NATION POSITION DESCRIPTION

 TITLE: Community Language Liaison

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Kaw Language Director

CONTROLLING SUPERVISOR: Chief of Staff

TYPE: Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

This is a three (3) year grant position designed to prepare an individual to speak and teach the Kanza language and to encourage community involvement in Kanza language revitalization.  This position will dramatically increase participation in language-related activities among tribal citizens and improve general proficiency in language use in the service area through grassroots community organization, teaching, and close cooperation with tribal citizens in the service area. The Community Language Liaison will also help to develop and implement language course content and a system of participation incentives, coordinate oral proficiency assessment, track partnerships, and assist the Language Director with grant-related activities and reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree preferred in the following areas:  Linguistics, Native American Studies, Anthropology, Education, and/or the Humanities.  Years of experience with a second/foreign language and/or years of employment in a tribal administration may be substituted for education.  High School Diploma/GED required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. In Year 1 of the grant, the Community Language Liaison will undergo approximately nine months of daily Master-Apprentice-style language teaching and language course instruction training under the Language Director, at approximately (but no more than) 50% FTE.
  2. Also in Year 1 of the grant, but running all through Year 2 and the beginning of Year 3, the Community Language Liaison will actively recruit—probably on a weekly basis, and including in-person, door-to-door style recruitment and by both telephone and direct mail—Kaw tribal citizen involvement and participation in language classes, at approximately (but no more than) 50% FTE. This will be done primarily from among two high tribal population centers, Ponca City and Newkirk. There will be quota of 35 Kaw adult and school-age students to participate in pilot language classes (to test the assessment system) and incentivized language classes. Because of this, the Community Language Liaison will have to maintain good ties with the entire community, and will refrain from politicking or any other sort of socially-charged activity likely to alienate entire portions of the target population. The Community Language Liaison will also have to be able to drive a GSA vehicle on a weekly basis.
  3. In Years 1-3 of the grant, the Community Language Liaison will also generally encourage grassroots Kanza language use and participation among tribal members in the service area, in surrounding communities, and online. As such, the Community Language Liaison will be expected to use the Kanza language as often as possible in daily communication to promote language use and be familiar with all language department products and activities so as to promote them among tribal members.
  4. In Years 1-3 of the grant, the Community Language Liaison will help develop and distribute materials and as needed.
  5. In Years 1-3 of the grant, the Community Language Liaison will also assist in face-to-face oral proficiency assessment of students.
  6. In Years 2 and 3, the Community Language Liaison will teach at least one section of language classes located in Kaw City, Newkirk, or Ponca City (or perhaps classes at all three on a rotating basis) and will help prepare materials and track community participation, at approximately 50% FTE.
  7. In Years 2-3 of the grant, the Community Language Liaison will attend an average of two multi-day, out-of-state meetings and conferences and one out-of-town conference in Oklahoma.
  8. In Year 3, the Community Language Liaison will assist in grant close-out and reporting duties, at approximate 50% FTE.
  9. Perform any and all other reasonable duties as assigned by the immediate and/or controlling supervisors.

This position is funded through a Federally funded Grant.  In the event of a Federal Government shutdown, or for any reason we are unable to draw down the Federal Grant monies, this position will be furloughed until such time as the Federal Grant monies are again available..  In the event this grant ends, there is no guarantee of continued employment.

All new hires will be required by the Kaw Nation (post hire) to submit to an employment drug screen.  Failure to pass the post hire drug screen will lead to withdrawal of the job offer or termination of employment.

Excellent benefits are available including BCBS Medical and Dental, VSP, Prudential Life, 403b and IRA plans.  Generous paid leave for sick and vacation.
