Welcome to the Kaw Nation

Debbie Lewman For Tribal Council Member #1

Hello, my name is Debbie Lewman and I would like to share with you my intent to run for Tribal Council Member #1 in the September 9th Election.

Let me tell you a little about my family. My Grandfather was Alvin “Waddie” Pappan and my Mother was Maxine “Pappan” Cravens, both enrolled members of the Kaw Tribe. I am married to my husband, Bud, of 35 years and we have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. I have lived in our service area all of my life. By attending The Tribal Council meetings and the quarterly General Council Meetings I have learned a lot about the issues before our Nation and believe I would be an asset to serve as a Tribal Council Member. I would strive to make our Tribal Members a priority when making decisions and would work towards the future of our Nation.

My first job was with Conoco Inc. as a Senior Property AnaIyst and was employed with them for several years until I decided I wanted to change careers and work for our Tribe.  I was employed at Kanza Health Clinic for 18 years and was the Business Office Manager during a majority of those years. In 2011, I served for 4 years as Commissioner on the Housing Board as Vice-Chair. In 2015, I decided to apply at the Kaw Housing Authority for the Executive Director position and was hired to fill that position. I’ve served in supervisory and management capacities for most of my career. It has been rewarding, during my tenure, of the relationships I have established with many of you.

With the challenges that face our Nation, I place importance on fulfilling the needs of our people with special emphasis on our Tribal Elders and our future generations. I have listened to our Tribal Members concerns and believe it is the responsibility of the Tribal Council to represent and serve our membership as thoughtfully and respectfully as they can. We need to make some intelligent choices with respect to the best ways to provide for all future Tribal needs. We need a very strong and diverse economy that is not too dependent upon one or two businesses.

As decisions are being made that affect each of you, we need to be open minded and work as a team to sustain Kaw Nation and make it stronger than ever. I will not make empty promises, but will do my best to let “your voice” be heard and will work for all Tribal Members equally.

Take a stand on September 9th and vote at the polls or request an absentee ballot.
